Aghaboe Abbey

Founded in the 6th Century by St. Canice, the Abbey grew as a major centre of learning, commerce and agriculture. The original monastery burned in 1234 and was rebuilt as an Augustinian priory. 13 minute drive from Donaghmore.

Heywood Gardens

Consisting of gardens, lakes, woodlands and architectural features in the grounds of a now vanished house. The estate was developed in the 18th century. Admission is free, see website for seasonal opening hours. 25 minute drive from Donaghmore.

Rock of Dunamase

Dating back to 845 this National Monument was once the fort of the Irish Kings of Laois and is an imposing and stunning example of a ruined fortification overlooking the County, located some 6km outside of Portlaoise and 1km off the N80 to Stradbally. 40 minute drive from Donaghmore.

Located 3 minutes from Donaghmore Famine Workhouse and Agricultural Museum and located in the old Cornmill that served Donaghmore and the surrounding area, the museum boasts an array of vintage hand tools, machinery, engines and tractors.
